SHAH CIHAN

Shah Cihan is the grandson of Ekber Shah and son of Cihangir Selim Shah. He was born in 1591. He was enthroned in 1628. Shah Cihan, who was the fifth ruler of Turkish empire founded in India, created one of the brightest periods of Turkish domination in India.

Shah Cihan lived a very rich and magnificent period of sultanate. He weighed art and science a lot. Many civilized monuments were erected in his period. He improved and enlarged Delhi city. The jewels on Shah Cihan's throne were on everybody's tongue.

The Taj Mahal Tomb constructed in Agra by Shah Cihan for his beloved wife Ercüment Banu, known as Mümtazmahal, is still dazzling as a most delicate and high architectural monument of Turkish art. Taj Mahal still lives as one of the most beautiful monuments of Turkish civilization. With this masterpiece, Shah Cihan eternalized Turkish art with one of its most beautiful examples. The architects and masters of this monument went from Istanbul.

The last days of his life passed in disease and in prison. Because when he got sick, his sons fought for the throne. His son Alemgir the 1st (Evrengzib) eliminated his brothers and dethroned his father. Shah Cihan died in 1666. He is buried in Taj Mahal, one of the most elegant architectural monuments of the world, together with his beloved wife.
