In the beginning of the Golden Horde State, the city of Astrahan had been founded on the right coasts fo the city of Idyll that was the centre of the formes Khazar State and it has preserved its importance as a trade port until nowadays. Ibn Batuta described this city as a "very beautiful state with big bazaars". It has been observed that this state was the summer resorts of the khans in those times. A. Kontarini cited that the city belonged to three nephews of the khan and they only stayed there for a few months in the winter; and that the houses in this big city that was surrounded with low walls were not in good condition and that there were ruins of big buildings that must have been demolished in the recent past. Furthermore, he also stated that it has been rumoured that the city was an important trade centre in the past and all sorts of goods were imported from the Byzantine to the city through the pay of Don River. Although the city was destroyed by Tamburlaine in the years of 1395/1396, it had acquired its older importance as a trade centre pursuant to particularly the decline of Saray that was the capital city of the Golden Horde State.
