The origin of Stroganov family could not be definitely determined. However, it is much probable that one of their ancestors was a Tatar prince of the Golden Horde State that got into the service of the Russians and became Christian. The children and grandchildren of this person had settled in the city of Novgorod. Within a short period, this family acquired great wealth; and it started to operate with commercial activities in "colonies" of Novogrod located in the northern Russia.
In the year of 1445, the Moscow Prince Vasiliy Vasilyeviç was taken prisoner by Kazan Khan, Ulug Muhammed. Upon this event, the bail fee was given by Stroganov family to save him. This situation shows that this family was very rich in those times and that this family had close relationship with the family of the Moscow prince. In the course of time, the influence of this family increased gradually and finally, two brothers from the family of Stroganov captured the upper region of Kama River that extended towards the banksof Çusoyava River and Ural Mountains. The fortified places that they had constructed each became a base for the Russian domination.
In the year of 1573, Muhammed kul who was the brother of Sibir khan, Küçüm organised an attack that extended towards the banks of Kama. Upon this attack, the Stroganov family started to establish the defence systems that were much more founded. As a result of their application to Moscow, the Tsar ordered them to construct fortified cities along Tahçi and Tagil Rivers and to arrange detachments from the native Vogul, Ostyak, Samoyed and Ugrian people as well as the Kazakhs that were used in paid services. Upon these arrangements, they were ordered to declare war against the Sibir Khanate. Therefore, this family was the pioneer in the establishment of the Russian domination in Sibir and they had organised the first military expedition against Sibir.
