DEMOGRAPHIC STUCTURE OF SYRIA

In Syria, census is held once in every decade. For that reason, in different documents there are numbers which aren’t consistent with others. In census, which was held in 1981, Syria’s population, which was 9.934.000 in last census, went up to 14.887.000.74% of this population is Sunni, 16% Shi’i Muslim, and the rest Jews. The population increase of last decade is 33.6%. In that case, annual increase of the population is 3.3%. According to the last census, 47,9% of the population live in cities, and the rest, that is 52,1% live in rural area. 67% of total Syria’s population live in Damascus, Aleppo,Hama, Humus and around Lazkiye.

Only 1/3 of the population that is at the age of working can find job-more than 1.000.000 Syria citizen work abroad. 47% of active population work in agricultural sector, 20% work industrial sector and also 33% in service sector. 42-45 people live in per kilometers. Literature in proportion to total population is 58%, average life is 54years.Annual import is2,7 billion dollars, export is3,6 billion dollars. 42% of export materializes with ABD. Annual national income is 30billion dollars national income for person is 2300 dollars. Syria’s national language is Arabic.

Defense budget is 2,2 billion dollars and the number or Active Armed Forces is 420.000.In addition to 1000 militia forces, in the event of mobilization, the number personnel that can be employed is 2.602.000. Damascus goes on depending on East Europe and Independent National Assembly for economic assistance and counseling, and for military equipment it depends on Warsaw Pact Countries and China.90% of Syria population consists of Arabs who speak Arabic, 4% of the rest of population is formed by Kurdish, 2% Armenians and 1% Turkish. Besides, Circassions, Asuri and Jewish are also important minority groups. Kirmanci Kurdish is the most important of all the minorities who speak ethnic language. The other two Sunni Muslim ethnic groups, who aren’t Arab, Circassions and Turkmen.
