Azerbaijan had been under the domination of various states due to its geopolitical position as a country since the 6th century BC. It has taken its name pursuant to the settlement of Turks into the region. Turks settled in Azerbaijan in the 4th and 5th centuries DC. Azerbaijan that was under the domination of Muslim Arabians in the year of 643 was governed by the Turkish emirs in the period of Abbasi State. The Seljuk raiders penetrated into Azerbaijan since the 7th century.
However, Oguz tribes started to settle into Azerbaijan after the years of 1015-1016. This region was under the dominion of Seljuk State in the period of Sultan Alparslan. Then, this region was dominated by Atabegler (Tutors) and Harezmshah State in the 12th and 13th centuries. Pursuant to the Mongolian domination that started in the year of 1320 but lasted for a short period, Azerbaijan suffered from the invasion of Cuci people. Afterwards, Iran and Golden Horde States established dominion in Azerbaijan. In the year of 1534, Azerbaijan was annexed to the Ottoman lands by Kanuni Sultan Suleyman. However, there were various khanates established in the region until the 19th century and the stability could not be realised.
Pursuant to the collapse of Tsarist Russia, Azerbaijani Turks founded National Republic of Azerbaijan on the date of 28th May 1918. However, this Republic was abrogated upon the invasion of Azerbaijan by the Red Army on the date of 27th April 1920. Soviet Unions gave some of the lands of Azerbaijan to Georgia and Armenia in the year of 1936 and established 3 republics subject to it in the region. 56 rebellions that were initiated for the independence of Azerbaijan in the period of Soviet Unions were suppressed in a bloody and violent manner.
Pursuant to the disintegration of the Soviets, Azerbaijan declared its independence in the year of 1990 and it was invaded again by the Red Army. However, Azerbaijan succeeded in the declaration of independence together with Latvia, Esthonia and Lithuania in August 1991.
