It is an autonomous republic connected to the Azerbaijani Republic. Its north and south parts are surrounded with Armenia and the southern and western parts are surrounded with the lands of Iran. There is a frontier distance of thirteen kilometres between this republic and Turkey located on the West Side. Turkey has called this border zone as "Dil Ucu" (tip of tongue). The road that connects Turkey with Nachicevan passes through the "Bridge of Nostalgia" that was constructed over the River Aras in the zone of Tip of Tongue. This Autonomous Republic has also been named with the name of its capital city of Nachicevan that was also the capital city of the historical Nachicevan Khanate. This city has a population of approximately 70.000 nowadays and the total population of the Autonomous Republic is nearly 400 thousand people.
