The fundamental food of the Steppe Turks was meat in the beginning. They would mostly eat horseflesh and mutton. Attila had only eaten meat in the famous feast to which Priskos had participated. Turks that produced meat with abundant amount had learned to tin meat in order to preserve it for a long time. The tinned meat was one of the principal products that were exported to China. The most famous Turkish drink was kumis that was made of fermented mare's milk. This drink was mentioned within both the Chinese and the western resources. The various drinks that were made of wheat and maize were called as "begni" by the Gokturk people. The vegetables were not in demand.
The steppe foods actually included milky maize, cheese, and yoghurt. A drink named as "lo" that was prepared through flavouring yoghurt with cherries and apricots was widespread among the Hun people. Chinese people had learnt to eat fat from the Turks. Uighur people (in Turkestan) would cultivate grapes and they would produce grape molasses and wine (boron).
