Tiryaki Hasan Pasha is the mythical hero of Kanije castle defense. He, after resisting an enemy army of forty thousand people with four thousand Turkish soldiers, routed them. It is a glorious page of world history.

Tiryaki Hasan Pasha was brought up in Enderun (Palace School). He worked under Sultan Murad the 3rd for a period of time in the palace in 1574. Then he became Zigetvar Bey and General Governor for about twenty years. Tiryaki Hasan Pasha was a very brave commander who ventured fighting alone in a war. He became the General Governor of Bosnia and Kanije for some time. During the days Hasan Pasha was the commander of Kanije, one day he saw that an enemy army of about forty thousand people consisting of Romans, Spanish, French and Hungarians besieged his castle.

Tiryaki Hasan Pasha was not discouraged by such tenfold superior force. He did not give up and resisted for seventy days. He routed the enemy with several military tricks and took many weapons as spoils. Such victory raised his name and increased his reputation. He was granted the title of vizier and congratulated by being sent a sword and three horses. Tiryaki Hasan Pasha worked as the general governor of Bosnia and Rumelia for a long time. He overcame many brigands in the meantime and maintained public order .

Tiryaki Hasan Pasha died in 1611.
