While Sultan Alaeddin Keykubad was occupied with the affairs of Anatolia, the Mongolian threat was in advance from the central regions of Asia towards the west. This situation led the Anatolian sultan to take important precautions against this advance. Artuklu and Eyyubi rulers that dominated in some of the regions of the Eastern Anatolia changed side frequently. In order to eradicate these changes and to stop the Mongolian invasion, Alaeddin Keykubad organised a military expedition towards the Eastern Anatolia with the purpose of taking proper precautions. He captured Kahta, Hisn-i Mansur and Cemisgezek (1226) and then, Erzincan, Kemah and Sebinkarahisar. Thus, he abolished the Mengucuk-ogullari dynasty (1228). Andronikos, the emperor of Trebizond tried to benefit from the occupation of Sultan and set in motion in order to capture Samsun and Sinop. Upon this news, Keykubad went immediately to Trebizond over Bayburt-Macka and besieged the city, but her could not capture the city due to the heavy conditions of the weather.
