Turks had adopted some other religions apart from the religion of Islam before. However, the religions such as Judaism, Christianity and Buddhism could not find adequate supporters among them. Moreover, there had been severe opposition against the diffusion of these religions. However, we cannot observe such a situation in the adoption of Islam by Turks. Syrian Christian Mihail (died in 1199), a theologist and historian that lived in the century XII had provided the following information: “Turkish Nation believed in one God. The fact that the Arabians believed in one Allah led the Turks to adopt the religion of Islam.” This determination of Syrian Christian Mihail reveals a reality. The fact that the Turks had believed in the supreme and eternal Gok-Tanri (Sky-God) since the century III BC has been revealed as a historical reality. Therefore, they could easily adopt the Allah of Islam that was not in contradiction with their understanding of “God”. On the other hand, the ideal of holy war in Islam supplemented the warrior spirit of Turks and their ideals towards the domination in all over the world.

Turks have found their ideals in the virtues of the holy war and the rewards that were promised in the After-life for combatants. Essentially, the fact that rewards were promised in the afterlife in proportion with the enemies killed for the sake of their beliefs was an initiative factor that encouraged the adoption of the new religion. The Prophet’s Sayings pertaining to Hz. Mohammed about Turks caused the emergence of a sympathy and closeness to the prophet of Islam among Turks. The Saints and the spiritual teachers in the religion of Islam substituted Kam people that had had the God-given power of working miracles and foretold the future. In fact, they have mixed in one another and the change that occurred could not even be perceived. The great similarity between the orders of Turkish traditions and the religion of Islam were of great significance particularly in respect of the moral issues. These factors that we have tried to summarise in brief indicate why and how the Turks adopted the most perfect religion and civilisation of the period that was suitable for the beliefs and ideals of the Turks.
