Kuban Turks rebelled against Sahin Giray and they defeated the forces that he had sent. Since the Crimean people rebelled against him, the khan took shelter in Yenikale and the Russian people. The Grand Assembly that gathered sent a round robin to the ruler (September 1782). Baht Giray that had been sent as the khan by the ruler 5 years before ascended the throne again. However, before long, Sahin Giray returned with Russian forces. The Russian general Potemkin massacred 30.000 of Crimean people without discrimination of women and children. Upon this slaughter, the Crimea turned into a province of the tsardom (8th April 1783). The Ottoman State did not have the proper conditions to declare a new war in that period. Therefore, they concluded an agreement signed on the date of 8th January 1784. Accordingly, the Ottoman State recognised the annexation of the Crimea, Taman and Kuban to Russia. The Kuban River was considered as the border between the two sides.
Towards the year of 1787, the possibility of war against Russia came to an inevitable state for the Ottoman State. Anybody was not able to stand the abandonment of a Muslim country like the Crimea to the domination of tsars. The explicit threats of this cruel enemy that settled in the northern coasts of the entire Black Sea posed a danger for particularly Istanbul (Catherine II visited the Crimea in the year of 1787) and these threats turned into an unbearable condition. The purpose of the new war for the Ottoman State was to save the Crimea. In the course of this war, Sehbaz Giray and Baht Giray fought against the Russians as the leader of Bucak Turks within the Ottoman Army under their title of khan. However, the Ottoman State that was defeated left the disputed area extending towards Dnester River to Russia upon the Yaş Convention (1792). Russia did not abstain from alleging that Bucak (Bessarabia) was submissive to the Crimean khans in the past. They could only capture this region after a new war and in accordance with the Bucharest convention in the year of 1812. Therefore, the Turkish Muslim population that had been submissive to the Crimean khanate in the past and all the countries with these inhabitants were under the domination of Russia.
