Astronomer Ruler

Ulug Bey who was the crown prince in Samarkand when his father died did not leave this place. He moved the capital city of the khanate to Samarkand. His abbreviated name was Muhammed Turgay, and his full name was Sultan Alaüddevle Uluğ Bey Mırza Günkan. However, he had acquired fame with the name of "Ulug Bey".

Ulug Bey was born in the year of 1394. He governed the region of Transoxania with the capital city of Samarkand in the name of his father since he was 17 years old. He had established dominion in this region like an actual ruler for 38 years. When he replaced his father upon his death, he had the proper experience. He had been a well-educated ruler, and he had learned much about the logic, mathematics and astronomy as well as his religious knowledge. Then, he had become of the greatest astronomers on the world.

When Ulug Bey became the Great Khan, he tried to establish and develop close relationship with the Ottoman State. The envoys, emissaries and the scientists started to travel between these two Turkish countries.

However, in the first year of his Khanate, he suffered from the attack of Uzbeks and the struggles for the throne emerged. On the other hand, Karakoyunlu and Akkoyunlu States set in motion with an attempt to capture Khorasan. Meanwhile, his elder son became the leader of the people in Khorasan and he rebelled against his father. In the course of these struggles, Ulug Bey was killed with a sword (1449). It has been rumoured that this assassination was organised by his son, sultan Abdüllatif Mirza who replaced him. Abdüllatif Mirza could remain in the throne of the khanate for only 4,5 months and he was also killed as a result of an assassination.

In the course of these struggles and civil turmoil, Miranshah's grandson, Ebu Said established dominion in the year of 1452. He had stopped the raids of Kasghar Khan, Esen-Buga; and he had saved Khorasan from Karakoyunlu State. He wanted to recapture all the regions that were lost.

However, he was defeated in a war that he fought with Akkoyunlu ruler, uzun Hasan in the region of Karabag in Azerbaijan in the year of 1469. He was taken prisoner and then, killed.
