The Assassinations of Salah Terzi and İbrahim Hamza
Following this, the tension lasted long in Kerkük. Once again, an assassination took place on 9th January 1962. This time, The Turkish people voiced on objection in a larger- scale. In that date coinciding with Ramadan, Salah Terzi was volleyed bullets into while two friends of him and he were breaking their fast in his shop. While Kemal, one of the people present there at the time, escaped with minor injuries ; İbrahim Hamza passed on at midnight. Besides, Salah Terzi was seriously injured. The people rushed to the hospital by losing their grip and raced to donate blood to Salah for his survival. The other day, that is, on 10th January 1962 on Saturday around noon he passed away too, despite all the efforts put.
However, Officials did not want to turn in the dead to the people. Hence, there were conflicts between the police and the people staging a demonstration. At last, the dead brought to the cemetery were turned in the people. The police wanted to disperse the people, reluctant to scatter, with their truncheons. Then, much more violent attacks occurred. The day after, the tradesmen in Kerkük protested the government by shutting down their shops. The Turks still were not content with this; so they attacked the murderers who played an important role in Kerkük Massacre. The people also attacked communists with sticks by breaking through the police cordon. The Security Forces which were in desperate straits, did nothing against the Turks anger. One of the communists living in a different part of the city was killed in the course of incidents; 15 of them, seriously injured, were taken to the hospitals. Following these movements, the government arrested and exiled 120 Turks. These incidents which took place in Kerkük were announced on the radio stations of Kahire and Israel.
