It is called Skopiye in Macedonian. Being a capital city it is built near Vardar River. Population was 504 thousand in 1990 but it received immigrants because of the conflicts in Kosova and Bosnia-Herzegovina. Being founded on antic Skupi town by Illirya civilization at the end of 5BC. After Roman invasion in 168BC, Byzantium sovereign started in 395AC. The city met Avars in the 8th century. Then Bulgarians followed them in the following century until second Byzantium sovereign in 11th century. When we came to 14th century, the city became the capital city of Serbian Kingdom.

Ottoman Empire conquered the city in 1389 after which it became a center town of border provinces. It was an important administration and commercial center during Ottomans. But an earthquake destroyed the city in 1963 and two million people died. The city had a modern appearance after this incident and there founded many plants producing sugar, iron and steel, chemicals, textile products, foodstuff etc.

After the unsuccessful Vienna siege in 1683 city castle was invaded and destroyed by Austrians. Ottomans captured the city again in 1690 but lost its importance in parallel to influence of Ottoman Empire in the Balkans. The city became a province and was bound to Ishkodra in 1869. After a short time under the control of Albanian nationalists, the city became the center of Kosova state in 1888. The tumult due to taxes by Kosova governor stopped during visit of Sultan Mehmet Resad V in 1911.

Serbia got the control of the city in the Balkan War in 1912 until Bulgarian invasion in 1915. Then French forces controlled the city at the end of the war. German and Bulgarian forces captured the city during world war II until when it was taken back by Partisans in 1944. Being a capital city of Macedonia, a member of Jugoslavian Federation, it is a modest city since it could not keep its importance in history.
