SHEIK EDEBALI

He was born in Merv city of Horasan in 1206. He migrated to Anatolia in his youth and settled down in Karaman first, and then in Eskişehir. He received his education in Karaman and Damascus. He has a wide reputation in Islamic sciences. One night when Osman Ghazi stayed in the convent of Sheik Edebali, he had a dream that a moon rising from sheik's body went into his body and a great tree from his belly covered whole the world. Sheik Edebali commented on the dream that Osman Ghazi would found a great state. It is said that he married his daughter Bala Hatun to Osman Ghazi after this comment.

Sheik Edebali set the political, administrative and legal foundations of Ottoman State's order. He applied the basic principles of Trade-guild and played an important role in passing Kayi Tribe into settled order. Therefore, he can be considered as the spiritual founder of Ottoman state.

The tomb of Sheik Edebali who died in 1326 when he was 120, was constructed by Orhan Ghazi. His advice to Osman Ghazi upon his being the emir is very famous. You can derive deep meanings from his words even today:

O Son

From now on Anger is ours, docility is yours

Resentment is ours, placating is yours.

Blaming is ours, bearing is yours.

Inability is ours, mistake is ours, toleration is yours.

Conflicts, discords, disagreements are ours, justice is yours.

Bad eye, ominous mouth, unjust comment are ours, forgiveness is yours.

O Son

From now on, dividing is ours, uniting is yours.

Laziness is ours, warning, motivating, forming is yours.

O Son

Know to be patient, no flower blooms before it is time

Make people live to make the state live

O Son

Your load is heavy, your work is hard, your power is delicate

May Allah help you
