However, when 30 barrels of gunpowder were exploded on the date of 15th October 1552, some of the city walls were demolished and the Moscow army could attack in groups to the internal section of the castle. Kazan people who became worn out as a result of the fights retreated to the citadel. A terrible slaughter occurred in the streets. Kazan spiritual leaders, grinds, and teachers who gathered around Kul-Sheriff Molla attacked to the Russians with only their swords around the Kul-Sheriff Mosque. All of them died in the battlefield as martyrs. Yadigar Khan was taken prisoner together with several persons in his retinue. Kazan fought until there remained a single person. When the city was captured, a terrible massacre was started that constituted the darkest pages of the Russian history. Nobody was left alive among the men. The women and children were killed. However, a small warrior group got out of the city and they took shelter in the forests in order to continue their struggles; and some of the people were taken as prisoners. All the wealth of Kazan was despoiled, and the mosques, small mosques and houses were destroyed and incinerated. Therefore, the "Kazan Khanate" that was established by Ulug Muhammed Khan in the year of 1437 existed for 115 years and it was abolished by the Moscow Tsar, Ivan IV on the date of 15th October 1552.
The heroism that the Kazan people showed in the defence of Kazan constituted one of the most glorious pages of the Turkish history. The slaughters that the Russians committed in Kazan reflect the most disgusting pages of the Russian history. As a matter of fact, the Moscow Tsardom followed the same method in the invasions attempted against the other Turkish countries pursuant to the capture of Kazan.
The war did not come to an end upon the capture of the city of Kazan. The tribes such as Tatar, Chuvash, Cirmish, etc. had constructed some castles and they showed resistance in an organised manner. The persons such as Sarı-Batır, Mamış-Birdi, Ahmed-Batır and Zeyn-Seyyid, etc. acquired fame as the leaders of these struggles. Mamış-Birdi had made the castle of Calim located in the north of Kazan City with a distance of 45 km. as the centre of the state and he declared Ali Ekrem who was the brother of the older Kazan queen, Suyum-Bike as the khan. The rebellion of the people took place between Kazan and Kama in the years of 1552-1556. The Moscow Tsardom suppressed these movements gradually; however, it could only establish order in the years of 1556-1560. Then, it established an organisation in the country of Kazan Khanate in accordance with its own benefits.
