Dominion on Buryat People (1648)
One of the most important Sibir tribes was Mongolian-Buryat people. This tribe lived on the banks of Angara River and the basin of Lena in the form of separate clans. As a result of the relations with Khirghiz people and the other Turkish tribes, Buryat people attacked towards Tunguz people (Evenk) that constituted another Sibir tribe and they would take "yasak" from these people. The Russians followed the Upper Tunguska River and came to Angara that was the downstream of this river. They founded "Bratski Ostrog" in the year of 1630. Therefore, the Russians seized the region of Buryat people. The Russian Kazaks started to force the Buryat people to give "yasak"; but they encountered resistance upon this enforcement. Buryat people besieged Kazakhs near "Bratski Ostrog" in the year of 1635 and they killed 50 people. In the year of 1641, a general rebellion burst out among Buryat people against the oppression of the Russians. They attacked to the regions where Russians resided in the location of upper sections of Lena River. They caused a terrible destruction. However, Buryat people had to retreat against the rifles of the Russians. Although some of Tunguz tribes had joined to Buryat people, the Russians established order within a short period and they forced the rebellious tribes to give "yasak". Buryat people refused to give "yasak" in the years of 1644-1645 and 1648 and they set in motion against the Russian Kazakhs. However, all the movements were suppressed with violence. Buryat people were despoiled in a merciless manner by the governors sent from Moscow, servants and the Kazakhs. The violence and oppression of a landowner's son named as Ivan Pohabov that was sent from Yeniseyk in order to collect furs caused even the rage of the Russians and an investigation was carried out about this man.
In the year of 1652, the city of Iskutsk (Ürküt) was found at the top section of Angara; therefore, Buryat people that resided in the regions near the Lake Baikal were subdued under the Russian domination. Upon the establishment of dominion over Tunguz and Buryat people, most of the regions in Sibir were annexed to the Moscow government.
