Sibir by Russians (1601-1683)
Upon the foundation of the city of Tobolsk in the year of 1587, the soldiers and the peole of the city and particularly the merchants coming for the collection of valuable furs increased in number in the Western Sibir; on the other hand, there were also some Kazakh gangs that wanted to continue the plans of Yermak. The Russian influence diffused along the banks of Obi River. The Russian officials that dwelled in these regions collected "yasak" (furs) in the name of the state and "takdime" (presents) for them and fur with the proportion of 1/10 in the name of the merchants from the native people. Therefore, they initiated the application of a regime of oppression executed by Moscow government over Sibir Tatars, Ostyak and Vogul (Mansi) people in the region. Those who did not give any "yasak" or those who were incapable of giving any "yasak" were sentenced to heavy punishments. The fortified sites that the Russian domination were based on were being constructed in the North-Eastern Sibir. The city of Mangazay (Mangazeya) that was founded in the river-mouth of Taz stream in the year of 1601 was an important step for the penetration of the Russians to the Eastern Sibir. After a few years, the city of Turuhanks was built in the region where Turuhan stream flowed into Yenisey River (1607). In the lower section of Tom River, a fortress (fort) was built under the name of Tomsk in the year of 1604. This shows that the Russians still continued their invasion of sibir even after the outburst of civil turmoil in the Central Russia. The Russian gangs, Kazakhs and "businessmen" penetrated into the central regions of Sibir in small groups and they despoiled the native people and they imposed "yasak" on them. In the beginning of the century XVII, the fields of the Russian influence reached to the region of Khirghiz-Kazakh that had immigrated to the upper regions of Irtish and Yenisey Rivers.
The fortress of Makovski was founded in the place where Ket river got closer to Yenisey River in the year of 1618. The Russian boats were dragged from land and consigned to Yenisey River. The city of "Yeniseysk" was founded on the coasts of Yenisey River (1619). Therefore, the Russians had the opportunity to penetrate into the banks of Angara rivers that flowed into "Upper Tunguska" and the Lake Baikal and thus, to arrive to the downstream of Yenisey River.
