The lands surrounding Iraq today include Musul, Baghdad and Basra in division of management in Ottoman Empire. Baghdad and Basra has been known Iraq as a geographical name for nearly 1500 years, and it has been known Musul area as El-Cezire too. Actually, the expression of Iraq has not been used up to now as a concept that explain the people's own land or define the land and border of a country in any stage of the history. Iraq and El-Cezire countries shown their borders above differ from each other in historical, geographical climatic and ethnic bases terms. But after World War I., El-Cezire and Iraq areas diffrent each other in any sight were unifed under none of Iraq in a convenient way to the English policy and benefit. In this way, not only the state but also as it's expressed the name of it, an artifical establisment were made up according to the English's diplomatic policies. So we should point uot that it is not the right expression that's used still Iraq Turks and as it's mentioned above it's a mistake spring from suni yakıştırma. The Turks settled in not actually Iraq, but Musul, with the other saying El-Cezire area. As it was seen in the texts of 1923 Lozan and 1926 Ankara Treaties, it was called Musul Turks to Turks in this area until recent years.
Because, the name of Kerkük which is the cultural centre and hard of the Turks living in Iraq with population reaching nearly 1 million it has been the symboll of the Turks in that area for the past 40-45 years. The researchers naturally would rather use the expression of the Kerkük Turks. Some writers and historians also prefer using the expressions of El-Cezire or Musul Turks old, and commen geography name, in order to explain the historical events of the some periods. Following these explanations, Iraq Turks or Iraq Turkmen or Kerkuk Turks or Kerkük Turkmen have been the expressions we come across oftenly. Right to useamong these the expression of the Kerkük Turks or Turkmen though not false but it that not able to express all the Turks living in Iraq and may include only the Turks in Kerkük and so it will cause misunderstandings. Instead of this, we prefer using the expression of the Iraq Turks or Turkmen though it's wrong but it includes all the Turks in Iraq.
