The migration of people in Kerkuk
On 26th March 1991, it was understood from the gun bullets in the city that the army, coming from Baghdad, had almost come up to Kerkük. When Kerkük was begun to attacked with grenades, Kerkük, people got into panic and got flurried to go away somewhere else. The army, coming from two ways, started to attack common and unarmed people, anyhow. Armed Kurd militants had already left the city. Helpless people, did not know what they would do also had not decided whether to stay in Kerkük and wait their end or move somewhere else. Hundreds of families left Kerküt with all household and began to move towards north. The army, reaching the Kerküts suburbs, got into the city easily since they did not face any resistance from anyone. Most of the people, staying in the city, were in a really bad condition and they were waiting for their end hopelessly. In spite of this, a lot of people died of soldiers shoots. Innocent fellows lost their lives because of gunned attacks towards their houses. A dramatic travelling had begun in the group which started to set out towards Altınköprü and Erbil. Military helicopters gave support to the army from airline, following the peoples fleeing in confusion, and started to kill the tired and disordered people.
