In respect of the general appearance, the Turkish population is defined with youth and dynamism. According to the census in 1997, there are 62,6 millions of inhabitants in Turkey. Although there are significant migrations to the cities, 47% of the population still lives in rural areas. Turkish is the official language; however, English is widely spoken in Turkey. There are various high schools and universities in the country that provide education in English language. The other foreign languages that are widely spoken are German and French languages. Istanbul that has been the capital city of three empires is the biggest city of Turkey with its population of approximately 9.1 millions of inhabitants. There are 3.69 millions of inhabitants in Ankara that is the capital city of the country. The other big cities are Izmir, Konya and Adana.
