Khirghiz People from the Pamir Region

Pamir Region Pamir is a mountainous region with most of its lands located within Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan and a little of its lands located in China and Afghanistan. Pamir Khirghiz Turks live in the section of the mountainous Pamir region that is located within the borders of Afghanistan.

The most reasonable opinion about the origin of the word of pamir is displayed with the expression of its word meaning. Accordingly, the word of pamir was derived from the propositional phrase of pai-mir with the meaning of “foot of (mountain) peaks” that was formulated with the Farsi words of pa with the meaning of “ayak” and mir with the meaning of “commander, bey, emir; peak”. As it was stated in the relevant article of Turkish Encyclopedia, it has been alleged that this word was reformulated from the Farsi words of Bam-ı Dünya with the meaning of “roof of the world”. Although this opinion seems right considering that Pamir is said to be the “Roof of the World”, it is weak from the point of different words in form. Khirghiz people called Pamir Mountains as Terskey Alay in the past.
