Khirghiz people who could not withstand the invasion of their homeland by the Russians caused a rebellion under the leadership of Abdurrahman Abtabacı in the year of 1876 and under the leadership of Dervis Khan in the year of 1885. Both of these rebellions were suppressed in a cruel manner and the rebellious renegades were annihilated. Despite these events, the Khirghiz rebellions went on incessantly in the last periods of the Tsarist Russia. The Khirghiz Turks revolted under the leadership of Isan Muhammed who was the imam of Mintepe Mosque in Andican in the night of 17th-18th May 1898. These Khirghiz Turks that forayed the Russian garrison suffered from numerous casualties against the Russian army with modern weapons and 380 Khirghiz people who were caught alive were executed. Pursuant to this event, a group composed of 208 people resisted against kneeling down on their knees to greet the Russian General Governor who visited the region and these people were exiled to Siberia. Finally, the Khirghiz people initiated a big and collective rebellion on the date of 6th August 1916 and they joined in the war of independence that spread in the entire Turkestan. However, this rebellion was also suppressed by the Russians in a bloody manner and Khirghiz people suffered from lots of casualties. As a result of the suppression of the rebellion, nearly three hundred thousands of Khirghiz Turks had to run away to China. Despite all these sacrifices and migrations, the nationalist Khirghiz committees in Kyrgyzstan restarted their struggle for independence in the course of the Bolshevik Revolution in the following year in 1917. This struggle lasted until the year of 1929.
These rebellions and resistance that went on incessantly for a period over a half century in Kyrgyzstan could only be totally suppressed in the period of despotic government of Stalin. Meanwhile, Kyrgyzstan that was entitled with the Status of an Autonomous Region by Russia in the year of 1924 was annexed to the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics under the name of Kyrgyzstan in the year of 1926.
