We have observed that there was a period of interregnum in the Gazneli State pursuant to the death of Sultan Mahmud. As a result, Mes'ud defeated his brother, Mohammed and ascended the throne of the Gazneli State. Mohammed's eyes were burnt out and he was arrested. Mes'ud was a kind and brave soldier. However, due to his partisanship for violence and his addiction to alcohol, he could not be as successful as his father in respect of the state administration. Sultan Mes'ud was deprived of the strong characteristics that this father had had in respect of various issues. His retinue was complainant about his arbitrary movements and vagrancy. Mes'ud was determined to protect his father's success in India. However, he could not organise as much expeditions as his father did against the threats of Karahanli State, Ali Tegin and Seljuks. Nevertheless, he organised a military expedition in the year of 1033 and captured the castle of Sarsuti or Sarsava. Then, despite the increase of Seljuk threats, he insisted upon the personal management of an expedition towards the castle of Hansi near Delhi in the winter of 1037-38 and he captured this castle. Although he had been successful in his military expeditions towards India, he could not provide a strong resistance against Seljuk State. As a result, he encountered with Tugrul Bey in Dandanakan and he suffered from a terrible defeat after the war that continued for three days (1040). Mes'ud who was afraid of the lack of resistance against Seljuks retreated with his family and treasure and withdrew to India. However, in the course of this voyage, he was dethroned as a result of a rebellion and his blind brother, Mohammed was enthroned for the second time. Mes'ud was killed (1041).
