Being still a Turkish land in the second half of 19th century, Macedonia had no political, religious, nationalistic unity. Neighbor countries tried to destroy the Slav existence with various propaganda and suppression. There were religious and racist conflicts and revolts in the country. In the said period, these countries brought terror over both private and public life of Macedonian Slavs. Ottoman government continued its just polices in order to allow them keep their cultural, economical, social life. The life conditions of Turks were the same in the second half of the 19th century. There had been built goods relations between Macedonians and Turks after long years of living together. Turks of course important impact over Macedonians, which were visible in their lives. These were evident especially in language, literature, folklore, music, architecture.
For example, there were about 7-8 thousand Turkish words in Macedonian. Today, this number is about 3 thousand. Turkish people behaved positively towards Macedonian people in this period. They recognized the economical, social and religious rights of Macedonians. Turks and Macedonian Slavs supported each other in times of disorder. They protected themselves together against Bulgarian bandits appeared after Turkish-Austrian-Russian war between 1787-1792.
Turkish nation helped Macedonian Slavs many times. We can give Molla Halil Efendi case as an example. Turks reacted against Kopruli governor for his unjust behavior Christians in the town. They formed a mixed delegation in order to ask for help from French Commissioner in Selaniko. The head of this delegation was Molla Halil Efendi. He said to Commissioner Napoleon de Ring, Together with Christians, we want our governor to be changed We want to get along well with Christians irrespective of religious and nationalistic differences
Turks appreciated the progress of Macedonian Slavs in economy, education, culture and art. For example, Hadji Salih Efendi donated 10 liras to Hagia Kiril and Metody Prime School and said, I have heard many things from my Christian friends. But today İ cannot believe in my eyes. My heart will come out of my breast in happiness. I am very pleased to see your mentality and such a bright future. Usküp Metropolit Teodosiy sent a letter to Bulgarian Bishop Yosife I on 4 October 1890 in which he told about friendly behaviors of Turks towards Christians.
Famous Sloven ethnology specialist K.Gersin tells in his memories about Macedonia with these words. Turkish villagers kept them clear from dirt in Macedonia. They kept their honor, did not become alcoholic and bandit. They stayed loyal to Kuran principles and did not become murderer. Those are generally non-Muslims and non-Turks who murder.
In Turkish and Macedonian history, there is no exact information if there is any other political or social relation between New Ottomans and Macedonian Slavs until 1865. Reforms in Ottoman Empire in that time were generally made by the suppressions from European countries. These reforms caused political, educational and cultural progression af Macedonian Slavs together with all other Ottoman elements.
